All efforts made to reduce polluting emissions and to achieve friendlier, healthier and more liveable cities are commendable. For mobility companies it is not only a challenge, but also our responsibility. We have an obligation to do whatever we can and more in order to achieve this goal.
We know that our company has to put every effort into urban mobility and, for that reason, the commitments that Alsa has made in this area are the spearhead of our environmental strategy.
Since 2020 we have only been adding eco or zero-emission buses to our urban fleet. And by 2030 our entire purchased urban fleet must be made up of eco or zero-emission buses. These commitments strengthen our overall goal to be carbon neutral by 2050.
We recently published our 2020 Sustainability Report, in which, for the fourth year running, we showed our CSR work regarding our values in terms of excellence, safety, clients, people, community and environment.
In this sense, the report details the six pillars of our environmental strategy: reduction of carbon footprint, of energy consumption during transport, of energy consumption in facilities, waste management, water management and employee training and awareness-raising. A strategy that is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and which establishes specific indicators to assess to what extent we contribute to each one of them.
At Alsa we want to be leaders in the transition towards zero-emission mobility, to make our cities and our spaces greener, healthier and friendlier, especially since, according to the Spanish National Statistics Institute (INE), 88% of the Spanish population lives in 27% of municipalities, especially in large cities.
With this in mind, a large part of our investment focuses on reducing carbon footprint with clean technology like hydrogen. We are already able to show success stories using buses as public transport and we will present these in detail at the upcoming SUM Bilbao 21.
Many cities in which we operate urban buses, like Bilbao, already have vehicles that are helping to reduce pollution. There are also other improvements like digitalisation and more safety for travellers, which will help people make changes to their mobility habits. We hope that very soon private cars will no longer be the first choice in cities.
We are also aware that people living in the city need multimodal services. Alsa is aware of its role and has been carrying out last-mile and MaaS (Mobility as a Service) tests independently and in collaboration with other companies. The aim is to decongest cities and, of course, adapt to people’s needs.
Mobility, like any other essential service, has to serve people, and it is our ethical duty, as people, administrations and companies, to contribute to decarbonisation. Because it affects everyone’s present and future.
y el futuro de todos.
